If you are planning a website for a business in Qatar, the first real decision is the platform. For most small and mid-sized businesses it comes down to two: WordPress or Shopify. Both are good. They are good at different things, and choosing the wrong one usually shows up a year later as a site that is awkward to run.

This guide explains how to choose, including the points that are specific to selling in Qatar.

The short answer

Choose Shopify if the main job of the site is to sell products online. Choose WordPress if the main job is to explain your business, publish content and generate enquiries. If you need both, the answer depends on which one earns the money.

What Shopify does well

Shopify is a hosted online store. Hosting, security, checkout and updates are handled for you, so there is very little to maintain. You pay a monthly subscription and can add apps for reviews, subscriptions, shipping and email.

  • Fast to launch. Products, stock, discounts and orders work from the first day.
  • Reliable checkout. The checkout is tested across millions of stores and is hard to break.
  • Easy for a small team. Staff can add products and fulfil orders without a developer.

The trade-off is flexibility. You work within Shopify’s structure, some features need paid apps, and the monthly costs add up as you add them.

What WordPress does well

WordPress is an open content platform. You choose the hosting and you own the whole site. It suits company websites, service businesses, portfolios, blogs and anything with an unusual structure.

  • Flexible. Almost any page layout, content type or integration is possible.
  • Strong for content and SEO. It was built for publishing, which helps when search traffic matters.
  • No platform subscription. You pay for hosting and for the build, not a monthly store fee.

The trade-off is responsibility. Someone has to look after hosting, updates, backups and security. WordPress can run a store through WooCommerce, but that adds more to maintain than a Shopify store does.

What is different when you sell in Qatar

Payments

This is the point most guides written for other markets miss. Shopify Payments, Shopify’s own payment service, is not available to stores based in Qatar. You connect a third-party payment gateway instead. That works well, but check three things before you choose one: that it settles in Qatari riyals, that it accepts local debit cards on the NAPS network as well as Visa and Mastercard, and what it charges per transaction. The same checks apply to a WooCommerce store on WordPress.

Arabic and English

Many businesses in Qatar need both languages. Both platforms support Arabic and right-to-left layouts, but it has to be planned in the design from the start. Adding a second language to a finished site is always more work than building it in.

Delivery

Decide early how orders will reach customers: your own drivers, a local courier or an international carrier. Your platform needs to show the right delivery options and fees at checkout, and both can do that with the right setup.

How to decide in five questions

  1. Where does the money come from? Online orders point to Shopify. Enquiries, bookings and contracts point to WordPress.
  2. How many products do you have? A real catalogue with stock to manage suits Shopify. A handful of services suits WordPress.
  3. Who will update the site? If nobody on the team is technical, Shopify is easier to live with day to day.
  4. How much content will you publish? If articles and guides are a big part of your plan, WordPress is stronger.
  5. How unusual are your needs? Custom tools, member areas or complex page structures are easier on WordPress.

Can you use both?

Yes. Some businesses run a WordPress site for the company and content, with a Shopify store on a subdomain for sales. It costs more to run and only makes sense when both sides are genuinely important.

Whichever you choose, the build matters more

A platform does not make a site convert. The structure does: what a visitor sees first, how quickly they find the price or the contact button, and whether search engines can read the pages. Plan those before choosing colours.
